Liberty of Bruges (Brugse Vrije)

The Liberty of Bruges is located on the Burg square next to the City Hall. You can see the golden Lady Justice sparkling from afar on the roof, in honour of the building that served as a court of justice from 1795 to 1984. Today it houses the City Archives of Bruges.

Poortersloge

Those who like to see contemporary art will find a visit to the Poortersloge worthwhile. In this historical building, there are annual exhibitions of contemporary artists. In 2021, from May to September, you will be able to admire the exhibition 'The Porous City' as part of the Triennial.

Saint Saviour's Cathedral

This impressive and historic building is one of the oldest town halls in the old Netherlands. Inside, it is equally impressive. There are murals, original documents, life-size portraits of former rulers... Today, this building is still of great importance and forms the political heart of Bruges.

Basilica of the Holy Blood

The collection of historical buildings on the Burg includes the unmissable Basilica of the Holy Blood. The relic of the Holy Blood, which was supposedly brought to Bruges by the crusaders, is kept here in the Holy Blood Chapel.

State Archives

A piece of modern architecture can be found where the Dominicans' monastery stood for four centuries. Now it is a brand new building, where the state archives are located. The facades resemble a stack of papers, which reflects the contents of the building.

Jerusalem Chapel

The Jerusalem Chapel is the private chapel of the merchant family Adornes, originating from Genoa, Italy. The tomb, the magnificent stained-glass windows and the relic of the Holy Cross are unique. The private chapel is still used by the family for religious events. The tomb of Anselm Adornes and Margaretha van der Banck will be restored in 2021.
